Island chandeliers are a linear lighting fixture that can span the entire length of your bar or island. These are very popular because they have a lot depth and character. Island lighting is available in several light variations from two light versions to four light versions. Homeowners and designers love these because they have the look and beauty of a chandelier but the light is spread out over the length of your island.
Ceiling fixtures are designed in a way to provide general lighting to the entire kitchen. Typically, they project down from the ceiling and are usually the biggest lighting piece found in the kitchen. These fixtures can also be hung over a breakfast nook or a kitchen table. There are two types of ceiling fixture; flush-mount ceiling fixture with the glass or diffuser touching the ceiling and semi-flush ceiling fixtures where the bowl projecting from the ceiling such that it hangs a couple of inches away, with indirect light reflecting from the ceiling (think of it like an upside down umbrella).
The kitchen is a work area and as such needs to have lighting other than general purpose lighting. Take a look around at the dark spots in the kitchen. Maybe adding some under cabinet lighting would help showcase your counter tops while providing much needed light for that work area. Perhaps over the kitchen island there needs to be a series of small, more direct lighting fixtures to help in food preparation. Over the kitchen or dining room table, installing lights that can be on a dimming switch can create quite the mood. And when it's time to get the homework done with the kids, the switch can be turned up a few notches to insure proper light that will help with eye strain.
Some use track lighting for the design element. Others might use track lighting for the mere fact that you don't have any space above your kitchen to put a recessed can. There are remodel cans that can be installed from below if you can not get to the crawl space above your kitchen. But when you don't have that space is the time someone might opt for track lighting.
I have always loved the kitchen. In fact, it is my most favorite room in the house. Considering that I love everything there is to do about food (the tasty ones, that is), that comes as no surprise. I believe that the kitchen is one of the most important parts of the room. We need food to nourish us, calm us and all other purposes you might think of, and these foods are made and cooked inside the kitchen. You might recall a time when you have thought you have gone to heaven after tasting your mother home-made steak, or the time when you mouth watered from the smell of the brownies cooking in the oven. There is no doubt about it: this is the place tinkle and prattle of pans, plates, spoons, knives and ovens. Put simply, it is where all the accessories to make food are housed. For me, that sounds like paradise. Food heaven is what I call the kitchen.
