The sconce is a wall fixture which can be electric or feature candles. Reminiscent of medieval times, however, they were widely used in the XVII century and still are popular choice in lighting fixtures to decorate your wall space, interior and exterior. It is during this time period that lighting experts believe the sconce started to develop as a fashionable piece in additional to being practical. In Italy, a mirrored piece was used behind the sconce to create illumination. It was also the Italians who began to design a more elaborate sconce by adding the sconce to corbels. It was not uncommon for sconces to be large sized at that time, they varied in high from 1‘-5‘. But keep in mind the sconces were featured in large places, such as castles and churches. The sconce of today is usually much smaller and appropriate to the size of the rooms in homes. Architects and interior decorators use sconces to decorate as a staple of their design scheme. The sconce never fails to deliver in creating style and atmosphere.
Decorating rooms with sconces can embellish the life of any room in the home. Sconces are the perfect fit for adding accent lighting and mood in foyers, bathrooms, hallways, bedrooms, sprucing up negative space and focusing on special elements such as artwork. There is literally no space in the interior or exterior of the home where sconces can’t do magic. Negative space is an area on the wall that doesn’t really contribute any functional view to the room and basically looks sparse. You could add a mirror to this negative space and pair both sides with the accent lighting of sconces and magically this space is no longer "negative". This same decorative look can be accomplished above a master bed or above a fireplace. The decorating possibilities are boundless!
Sconces help to illuminate darker areas in patios or gardens, making it possible to see clearer certain obstacles that may cause falls or accidents. Imagine going home in the night only to take a fall by tripping over some toys that your kids left out before retiring for the night.
Wall sconces are a great ways to add lots of ambient light as well as adding a unique design element to your homes decor. You can accent a picture or unique piece of decor in your home. Wall sconces can also be used in some general lighting applications such as using a few of them down a hallway. This is a great use because you can have the light shine up or even down. To create unique and different lighting elements that can make a hallway feel less drab.
Most externally placed sconces utilize a single light bulb. A number of them have a half-moon shaped lid that shields the bulb from view and imparts an upward shaft of light on the exterior walls. There are also wall sconces that have a full-cover opaque lens that renders a moon-glow effect, with the light dispersing around the fixture. From traditionally ornate designs to sleek-lined simple motifs, there is a range of styles available in the market. You can find them nowadays in various art deco style, rustic or contemporary and modern. There are even some with a shape of a leaf, which are really elegant to look at.
